How to Keep Your Furniture Termite Free

Imagine that you’ve got all your furniture made and spent a lot of it, but one day you find termites feasting on it. Breaks your heart, doesn’t it? Drywood termites eat into the wood by penetrating deep into the furniture. You can identify a termite infestation if you see mud tubes on the walls, traces of powdered wood around the wooden furniture, and a hollow sound when one taps on the wooden furniture. Hence, it becomes necessary to inspect the wooden furniture on a regular basis because the biggest drawback of it is that a termite infestation gets detected only after they have set up large colonies and caused immense damage.

But protecting your furniture from termites is not that difficult. So here a few tips on how to keep your furniture safe from termites.

Pest Control

One of the most efficient ways to protect wooden furniture from termites is to get occasional pest control done at your home or workplace. Professional pest control exterminators combat termites using chemicals or fumigation. You can also purchase anti-termite chemicals from the market and apply them directly on the infected furniture. But these chemicals require proper handling as they are poisonous and emit strong odors.

Use Wood Polish

Polish your wooden furniture periodically as regular maintenance. Certain wood polishes have termite-resistant properties and protect your furniture from termites. These polishes create a hard and glossy coat that protects and preserves the wood.

Use Aloe Vera Gel

Yes, aloe vera gel can be used to protect wooden furniture from termites. All you need to do is take an aloe vera and crush it till the gel inside is released. Then take that gel and rub it all over the wooden furniture. Aloe vera gel creates a barrier that termites won’t be able to cross.

Olive Oil and White Vinegar

Another way to protect wooden furniture from termites is by applying a mixture of olive oil and white vinegar to it. Mix four parts of olive oil with one part of white vinegar and apply it evenly on the wooden furniture. This mixture acts as a barrier and it will repel the termites quickly and easily.

Spray Borax Solution

Borax is a common treatment for eliminating or killing termites. Mix 1 spoon borax powder with 250ml warm water and spray it on the infested wooden furniture. But be cautious enough to wear a mask while doing so since borax releases toxic gases. Spray the solution in the tunnels made by the termites. You can also paint the infested area with the same solution. Painting the furniture with this solution will definitely eliminate the termites and protect the furniture from further infestation.

Precautions are always better than a cure. And if you are a little alert, you can easily protect your wooden furniture from termites. You can take small measures to avoid termite infestation. Like, avoid storing junk and other woods that may have a termite infestation in your home and backyard. Discard the damaged wooden furniture if you don’t plan to use it and especially if is termite infested.

Stay alert and if you find signs of termites, get help from a termite expert or try some of the techniques discussed above. Your house is precious and so is its furniture and termites just harm them. So take care of it.
